The History of the Institute

"…when someone is 30 their joy and well being and satisfaction in life is not related to how well they did on a trigonometry test. It’s more related to how they can deal with people, manage their own life, solve problems, and use their academic skills in a positive and successful way."

Scott Shannon, M.D., Adolescent and Child Psychiatrist

Due to the numerous requests from educators across the country for training in the Discovery Program, the Discovery Institute™ was established in 1996 to coordinate the training of teachers, counselors, and administrators in the methods and strategies of the Discovery Program. To meet this need, the Discovery Institute™ developed several training options: 1) a ten-hour instructional videotape package, 2) an on-site/in-district four-day training, and 3) an intense one-week summer session in Colorado.

Hopefully, by providing several different training opportunities, educators can teach the Discovery Program and related skills to a wide-reaching audience of adolescents. The impact of this training on a worldwide level is paramount to the vision of the Discovery Institute.™
